Super-economical cars

Oil is becoming scarcer and progressively more expensive, and as a consequence road transport is in crisis. It is only by developing ever more economical cars and alternatives such as hybrid and electric cars that the remaining resources can be eked out until entirely new technologies, such as fuel cell powered cars, become available.

Over recent years major motor manufacturers, often in partnerships with universities and research organisations, have been developing increasingly efficient cars. Here we will look at how they have reached the current position and how much further they are likely to go.

Just a few years ago, an economical car would deliver at best around 50 mpg. Nowadays it is not at all unusual to find cars with fuel economies of 75 mpg or even better, and even some relatively high performance cars can return around 60 mpg.

There are five basic ways to make a car more fuel efficient. These are the reduction of drag by employing sophisticated aerodynamic design; the reduction of weight, for instance by replacing heavy metallic components with their lightweight carbon fibre equivalents; more efficient generation of power using more efficient engines; developing more efficient ways to transmit the power to the wheels, in other words a more efficient drive train; and harvesting power lost by braking, for instance kinetic energy recovery systems.

In terms of aerodynamics, there is not much further to go. Modern cars use wind tunnel data in their design and this has allowed drag factors to be reduced to very low levels.

Currently the use of carbon fibre components in racing and supercars is standard, but for ordinary road cars it is prohibitively expensive. However, as manufacturing techniques improve and new developments are made, these will eventually trickle down.

Harvesting power from braking has made a significant headway, though it still has a long way to go. Energy storage using improved battery technologies will help. There is a huge amount of heat lost through engine cooling and exhaust emissions, and it is theoretically possible to harvest some of this energy too, and although the technology has not yet been developed, new thermoelectric materials that can convert exhaust heat directly into electricity are being trialled.

The development of more efficient engines has made tremendous progress over recent years and most of this is due to advanced in the development of advanced engine control systems, associated sensors and software. There is still plenty of space for further improvements and the Holy Grail is to be able micro-manage every individual piston stroke.

Power is transmitted from the engine to the wheels via the drive train which includes the gearbox. Drive train efficiencies have improved considerably over recent years, but they are still quite inefficient by virtue of the fact that they consist of so many moving parts. Using lighter materials helps, but new revolutionary ways of accomplishing the task are being developed in a number of centres.

The potential of all these developments is hybrid cars that are capable of around 100 mpg. It can’t come too soon.Similar Posts:

Kia’s new flagship sedan, called K9,n that look lile the BMW 7-Series, went on sale in South Korea on Wednesday. The full-size rear-wheel drive ambitious sedan is offered with two V6 engines, while pricing in Korea starts at US$ 46,900 and rises to $ 76,500.

Kia said that K9 will be launched in a number of key overseas markets starting in the fourth quarter of 2012. The new K9 has an overall length of 5,090mm and rides on a 3,045mm wheelbase, while overall width and height are 1,900mm and 1,490mm, respectively.

“K9 is our first rear-wheel drive large sedan for more than a decade and sets new standards for advanced design, new technologies and driving performance, representing the ‘best of the best’ of Kia,” commented Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s Director of Overseas Marketing Group.

At launch, the K9 is offered in Korea with two petrol engines, a 3.3-liter V6 rated at 296HP and a 3.8-liter V6 producing 329HP, both linked to Kia’s all-new eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Kia said that in overseas markets, the K9 will be available by an upgraded 286hp Lambda V6 3.8-litre MPI engine, with a 329HP 3.8-liter GDI engine joining the global engine line-up next year. The K9 features an electronically controlled air suspension with five-link suspension geometry.

Available comfort features include a 12.3-inch full size Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD cluster, a HUD (head-up display), twin 9.2-inch monitors to entertain rear seat occupants and a 17-channel, 17-speaker Lexicon (by Harman) sound system and Smart Cruise Control (SCC) which adjusts the vehicle’s speed to maintain the distance from the vehicle ahead.

Jeep unveils Wrangler Dragon concept at Beijing Auto Show

Finding new markets to deliver products to is a key strategy for companies when the world economy is as volatile as it has been. Car manufacturers have been trying to expand their market presence in new areas for some time now, but we have really seen a strong push for world market concepts the past couple of years, and now even niche ideas are starting to trickle through. With that in mind, allow me to introduce the Jeep Wrangler Dragon concept that was just unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show.

Take a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, add an all black paint job, gold and bronze highlights on the emblems, around the headlights and grille combined with a three piece hard top, and then finish it off with a bronze Chinese character on the side. They have also added embossing on the leather interior along with some other interior dress up additions. The Dragon sits on 35″ off-road tires mounted on 18″ rims. There is no word on the power plant yet, since it is just a concept and not slated for production at this time. Will this grab enough interest in China to justify bringing this package to Chinese consumers? We will just have to wait and see.

Victoria Beckham helps spice up the limited edition Evoque

The Range Rover Evoque has stirred up quite a sensation since its release. It has sold exceptionally well, gotten great reviews and is fast becoming a standard to which others must follow. So with all that being said… how do you up the ante?

Well if you’re Range Rover, you collaborate with Victoria Beckham to create the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition. Only 200 of these Special Editions are slated to be built, with only 5 heading here to the US. Victoria Beckham worked directly with Range Rover’s chief designer Gerry McGovern to help craft this two door only, limited edition model. What they have come up with is quite an eye full. Sitting on 20 inch gloss black rims, the matte grey paint job off set with gloss black and rose gold trim points make the Evoque really stand out. A micro suede headliner, hand stitched leather interior and rose gold interior accents are just a part of the interior touch ups. Each special edition will also come with a hand stitched leather portfolio autographed by Victoria Beckham. No price point has been mentioned yet… but as usual… if you have to ask… etc.
