Portland’s dance-rock ensemble Hockey sparked not only at this years Glastonbury but gained lots of attention (much to the thanks of radio hosts etc.) and hit major label honors and the re-release of ‘Mind Chaos’.
The funk-soul influenced indie guitar musicians with a nack to include hefty disco electronica ala LCD Soundsystem to generate a vibrant night-out atmosphere on their debut.
Songs like “Too Fake”, “Learn to Lose” and “Song Away” are true dance- floor magnets. The diverse influences that roar out of singer Grubin’s throat are just as diverse as the pallete of artists that flow on ‘Mind Chaos’. “Four Holy Photos” reminds of a lost Dylan track, “3 AM Spanish” and “Preacher” is a New Order and Zappa funk loaded rock tunes in the 70’s jive.
From the electronics, to the piano rock and preachy gospel funk and modern hipster indie, Hockey have wandered a wide road to cover more than the average indie-band.
Hockey have hit a great debut, and the snappy lyrics with dance-appealing tunes might grant these MTV Push artists a broader crowd.
